OVERVIEW

What is ISO 22000?

ISO 22000 is the international standard for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS). It combines the ISO 9001 approach to management with HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) principles to ensure food safety at all levels.

The standard requires organizations to identify and control food safety hazards, ensuring that food is safe for consumption.

It applies to any organization in the food chain, including feed producers, primary producers, food manufacturers, transport and storage operators, and retail and food service outlets.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HACCP is a risk management tool focused on food safety hazards. ISO 22000 is a complete management system standard that incorporates HACCP principles but also includes management elements like leadership, communication, and continual improvement.

ISO 22000 itself is not GFSI-recognized. However, FSSC 22000, which consists of ISO 22000 + sector-specific PRPs (ISO/TS 22002 series) + additional FSSC requirements, is GFSI-recognized.

Prerequisite Programs (PRPs) are the basic conditions and activities necessary to maintain a hygienic environment throughout the food chain suitable for the production, handling, and provision of safe end products. Examples include pest control, cleaning and sanitation, and personal hygiene.
